First Teacher Program -- What's Included with First Teacher
|
|
|
Newsletters: The monthly newsletters are friendly and
easy to read with useful information on parenting. We include
short articles on self-esteem, discipline, health and safety,
respect for authority, handling anger, sleeping and feeding problems,
nutrition, breast feeding, activities for children, immunization
and language development. In school districts where First Teacher
is sponsored, programs for families that are available from local
community agencies and the local school district are discussed.
We want parents to be involved and feel important within the community.
|
|
|
Developmental Cards: These cards help parents learn what
is expected and appropriate social, physical and mental development
for their child. These are mailed to families every three months
until age one and then every six months until age five. The cards
help parents understand their child's development so they will
better know when to seek help if their child has any developmental
delay.
|
|
|
Spanish Materials: We have translated the developmental
cards and portions of each newsletter in Spanish for those families
who wish to receive this edition.
Example of a Spanish parenting
article.

Hospital
Newsletter: Parenting Matters Foundation publishes a separate
edition of First Teacher that is targeted for parents of newborns. |

We can work with any group or school district who is interested
in providing a newsletter and/or developmental cards for parents
they serve. We can individualize the newsletter to your by including
articles about what is going on in your community and we will be
responsible for making contacts with other agencies or organizations
working with parents of young children in your community.
|
|
If you are working with less than 200 families, the generic newsletter
is the best route. It is not specific to any one area but still
contains all the great parenting articles. This program has been
very successful. Each school district does the program a little
different.
