Parents want to help their child do well in school but many do
not know how. Parents need help and support from their school
district to learn how to improve their child’s educational skill.
Parenting Matters Foundation is a resource for English and Spanish
speaking parents to learn ways to help their child improve in
school. The goals of Parenting Matters are:
|
|
|
To provide educational material to parents. We provide
a simple, friendly, newsletter with articles to help parents understand
what their child is learning at school, how to support the efforts
the school is making to help their child meet the essential academic
learning standards required by the state and the school district,
and how to work cooperatively with the school for their child’s
educational benefit. Understanding the educational process isn’t
easy for many parents. With help, the parent can learn about the
system and feel more positively about the process.
|
|
|
To help parents learn about general parenting issues.
A parent who knows what should be expected of their child will
have realistic expectations and appropriate discipline. Informed
parents who understand how to help their children from kindergarten
through high school will be better parents. Parents want to know
what they can expect of their child and how they can help the
child lead a happy, healthy, and safe life. Parenting is not an
easy job and we need to support parents in this difficult task.

|
|
To encourage a positive feeling toward education and our
public schools. Not all parents have had a positive educational
experience. This program helps them see their schools and community
reaching out to them in a friendly and positive way.
|
|
|
To inform parents of the many resources available to them in
our community. For school districts that subscribe for a program
specific to their district, the newsletters informs parents of any
school programs. Parenting Matters Foundation makes regular contacts
with community groups that provide services or classes for families
with elementary age children. We work cooperatively with the Health,
Police, and Fire Departments to include articles about health, safety,
nutrition, and immunizations.

To involve parents through a positive home-school partnership.
Parents want to be involved in their child’s education. Many parents
who are unavailable to attend meetings want to help make their child’s
educational experience a positive one. We need to reach out to all
parents; to effectively educate children, we need to form a partnership
between the school and home. In this time of higher educational
standards, parents are an educational asset we cannot afford to
overlook.
